Icon sizes: 256x256, 48x48, 32x32, 24x24, 16x16 File formats: ICO, GIF, PNG, BMP Why Is it In Your Best Interest To Use PNG Images in Your Web Design? The pros of including PNG file format in website creation over the different file types such as GIF and JPEG; the image format helps to make good and wonderful icons that will wow your customersThe PNG file type was introduced a few years back; it was brought out for consumers around 95/96 to meet the deficiencies of the traditional GIF image format. However, it did not make an impression because the early browsers were not designed to support the state of the art attributes of PNG so web designers and creators were forced to incorporate it sparingly. One of the primary hurdles faced by the format was Microsoft Internet Explorer which was the most well known and widely used browsers of the time; IE had little or no space for PNG support which meant that the format could only be used to a bare minimum. But, things went through a change with the introduction of IE7; this new product from Microsoft has aided in increasing the usability of PNGs. So lets take a look at three reasons why PNG is by far the best image formats in the market today: It is possible to create images that can be superimposed due to their transparency or a feature called alpha transparency: When you pitch GIF against PNG, will notice that one of the major differences is that you will only be able to save a specific color as transparent in GIF which means that you can get the color whether opaque or transparent with just transparency in betweenbut when you use PNG, you get a serious advantage; because the format can be used to produce semi transparency. This feature gives you the ability to save a PNG file with a soft drop shadow and then fuse it with a background that suits your taste. Through this feature you will be able to use an image as a watermark or a gradient background. The format allows for the gradual fading of hues from completely opaque to transparent, exposing the webpage below They look fantastic: Apart from the fact, that you get amazing flexibility wit PNG images; there are numerous other advantages to using this format. For instance, when you use a JPEG image, you lose some of the information from the initial image every time the file is saved, so in time, you will be able to see a noticeable deterioration in the quality of the media. Even if, this problem has been solved in in the file type and you will be able to save the pictures without losing any details, GIF only allows for a limited 256 color palette, which imparts it quite useless if you want to save a snap shot. On the other hand, when you use PNG, you can get the best benefits of the two file types; you will be provided a complete color display like the one used in JPEG format and it also provides managed color palette a la GIF files. Another advantage is that the storage of the file is lossless so the image does not change regardless of how many time you save it. PNG is self optimizing: A major concern that web programmers need to handle very often is the fact that the contrast and the brightness of the monitor has to be regulated to see the the display correctly; this problem occurs due to the Gamma settings of different monitors. Gamma is a method incorporated to distribute the brightness across the screen. However, various operating systems use varying Gamma settings. So, an image that is color corrected to suit Windows will seem wrong when seen on Mac. Again, in this case the innovative PNG picture format can prove useful, in PNG, you can save the files with with a Gamma correction feature that is innate so despite the differences in operating systems; the Gamma settings will be realigned to show an image with the impressive brightness and contrast.
