Icon sizes: 256x256, 48x48, 32x32, 24x24, 16x16 File formats: ICO, GIF, PNG, BMP Why Do You Need to Use PNG Images in Your Web Design? The advantages of including PNG file format in website designing over other file types like GIF and JPEG; the image format helps to make better and spectacular images that will prove alluring to your visitorsThe PNG image format was introduced quite a while back; it was put forth for consumers around 95/96 to cover the drawbacks of the popular GIF file format. However, it failed to create ripples because the the browsers of the time were not designed to support the advanced attributes of PNG so website designers and developers were compelled to incorporate it sparingly. One of the primary hindrances faced by the format was Microsoft's Internet Explorer which was one of the most popular browsers of the time; IE had limited provision for PNG support which equated to the fact that the format could only be incorporated in the most restricted way. However, things changed when IE7 was brought out; this new product from Microsoft has proved immensely useful in increasing increasing the usability of PNGs. So here is a look at three reasons why PNG is is often regarded as the best image formats around today: You will be able to create see through images or a feature called alpha transparency: When you compare PNG with GIF, it will become apparent that one of the major differences is that you will only be able to save a particular color transparently through the use of GIF this equates to the fact that the color can be transformed regardless of it being opaque or transparent with no other color in between; however, with PNG, you get a serious advantage; because the format is capable of producing semi transparent pixels. With this attribute, you can save a PNG image with a soft drop shadow and then fuse it with a background that suits your taste. The Image can also be used as a watermark or a gradient background. The file type gives you the option to use the smooth fading of shades from entirely opaque to transparent, so that you can see the webpage that lies in the background They look spectacular: It is a well known fact that PNG images give you extreme flexibility also; there are a myriad of other advantages to using this format. For example, if you choose a JPG image, you lose a part of the details from the original file each time you save the file, so in time, you will be able to view a conspicuous decline in the quality of the media. Although, this concern has been solved in the image format and it is possible to save the files without sacrificing any information, GIF has a limited color palette of 256, which imparts it quite futile if you are going to save a picture. But, when you use PNG, you could get the perfect features of both these formats; you will be provided a complete color display similar to JPEG file type and it also provides managed color palette like GIF files. Also the storage of the file is without loss so the photograph stays put despite innumerable times of saving the file. PNG is self optimizing: One of the hurdles that web designers have to tackle frequently is the anomaly due to which the contrast and the brightness of the monitor has to be adjusted to see the images correctly; this problem occurs due to various Gamma setting used in monitors from different vendors. Gamma setting is a technique incorporated to scatter the brightness across the display surface. However, diverse operating systems use varying Gamma settings. So, multimedia that is color corrected specifically for Windows may not look right on a Mac. Once again, in this situation the versatile PNG image type comes to the rescue, in PNG, you can save the images with with a Gamma correction feature that is innate so whatever operating system you are working on; the Gamma settings will be realigned to show a file with the impressive brightness and contrast.
